Presbyopia

Presbyopia is the normal loss of near focusing ability that occurs with age. Most people begin to notice the effects of presbyopia sometime after age 40 when they start having trouble seeing small print clearly – including text messages on their phone.

You can’t escape presbyopia, even if you have never had a vision problem before. People who are nearsighted will notice that their near vision blurs when they wear their usual eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct distance vision.

Before 40, we can change the shape of the lens in our eyes with the help of muscles inside the eyes and this helps us focus for all distances. After 40, the lenses become rigid and the muscles slowly weaken. So we need glasses to focus for near vision. The glasses no. will go on increasing until we are 60. This is a natural aging process and no medicines can treat it. Surgery for presbyopia is available but it is not totally effective yet.
