Why do you need an eye checkup even if you feel your eyes are fine? Routine eye checkups

WHY DO YOU NEED AN EYE CHECK-UP  EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR EYES ARE FINE?  SHORT ANSWER: SILENT EYE DISEASES.

If children have an unequal number of two eyes, they can develop squint or lazy eyes. There are silent diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration which do not cause any complaints in the early stages but can cause a loss of sight if detected too late. Even cataract surgery can have more complications if the cataract becomes too hard. You may have heard of your relatives who went blind in their old age. An eye check-up can pick up these problems in the early stage so that we can help you preserve your sight well into old age.

WHEN SHOULD YOU GET THESE ROUTINE EYE CHECKUPS?  Even if you do not have any complaints.

Children: At birth, 6 months and 3 years and 5 years.

Young adults: Once in your 20s and twice in your 30s.

Adults:  Around the age of 40, you get reading glasses. For the first pair, go to an eye doctor and get a baseline checkup. Your  Dr. will advise regular follow-ups, depending on your eye health and family history. Your tendency to get any age-related diseases can be detected by doing this and it can prevent silent vision loss. If you do not have any tendency for any eye disease, your dr. will advise eye check-up less frequently.

Adults 50 to 60: Every 2 years.

After age 60: Every year.

These check-ups are absolutely mandatory if you have:

  • High intraocular pressure
  • Positive family history of glaucoma or retinal detachment
  • Myopia – high minus number
  • Thin cornea
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
